{"id":474,"date":"2019-09-19T14:16:33","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T12:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.ostersjostiftelsen.se\/?post_type=project&#038;p=474"},"modified":"2019-09-19T14:16:34","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T12:16:34","slug":"the-cultural-meanings-and-practices-of-socialization-in-new-and-old-democracies-a-comparative-study-of-sweden-and-estonia","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/dev.ostersjostiftelsen.se\/en\/project\/the-cultural-meanings-and-practices-of-socialization-in-new-and-old-democracies-a-comparative-study-of-sweden-and-estonia\/","title":{"rendered":"The cultural meanings and practices of socialization in new and old democracies: A comparative study of Sweden and Estonia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project\u2019s main aim is to compare the meanings and practices of family and peer socialization in Estonia \u2013 a country with rapid ongoing social transformations to those in Sweden \u2013 a country with a long history of democracy and welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our previous comparative projects, we found the Estonian parents\u2019 socialization style considerably more hierarchical and less democratic (talking less, smaller emphasis on children\u2019s verbalization, and stressing the need to control their children\u2019s behavior) than the Swedish mothers\u2019 socialization style. The similar pattern was found to be typical of peer socialization. Although no cultural differences were found in the amount of peer talk, Estonian children talked more for the purpose to regulate other\u2019s behavior than the Swedish children. In the current project, we examine the culture-specific meanings attached to concepts connected with socialization styles (strict control, talkativeness, etc.), and its potential consequences.
